I think Cornell University has a really exceptional Hospitality program -- you should go to Cornell.edu and look around there.

As for skills: GREAT people skills; terrific drive to deliver customer service, and the ability to coach other employees to do the same. You should be interested in details, and have a general good head for business. If you're a good problem solver, and can keep a cool head when things go wrong, you're probably good hospitality material.

My recommendation would be to call a hotel (major brand like Marriott, or Hilton, or Sheraton) and ask the manager for an informational interview. Tell him or her that you're considering a career in hospitality, and would like to meet with someone who is doing the job today. Most managers would be happy to have that meeting, and delighted to tell you what skills they need at work to do an excellent job.

Have you worked at a hotel yet? If not, a summer or part time job while you're in school would answer a lot of your questions, and give you some practical experience in addition to any academic preparation you'll get in school. My older brother did that, and ended up as a General Manager for some terrific hotels in his career!
