What skills and education would be expected for a major hotel chains general manager?

A degree in Hotel Management from a reputed university and 10 years of experience with big hotel chain. Even MBA with good work experience can get this position. Many Chefs have also end up becoming GM. What skills and education would be expected for a major hotel chains general manager?
A degree in hotel management would be a good start. Also experience in both customer service and experience as a lower level manager in hotel.
